Municipal Election Spotlight: Ron Baier
I am running for Camrose City Council and Separate Catholic School Board Trustee because I like to help people. I enjoy being part of the solution to problems and contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life. I am a proactive and progressive thinker who likes to make things happen. I like to hold people accountable and accountability is essential at all levels of government, including administration, and city departments. I have a wealth of governance experience as well as a unique and varied background. My extensive experience in policy development, budgets, committee work, system planning, advocacy, work plans, grant proposals, along with my ability to research and analyze complex issues, streamline processes, implement plans, and motivate others will be invaluable to city council. I have learned a great deal about governance from my life's experiences, having attained a Master's degree in Administration, served on collaborative-style corporate boards for over 20 years, earned awards as a school principal, and excelled in service, retail, nonprofit, and inter-agency sectors. The greatest strength I would bring to city council is the totality of my experience and background gained through my work in the education, retail, service, small business, nonprofit, and interagency sectors.
While I am not reading any novels at this time, The Old Man and the Sea remains a favorite story of patience and perseverance when faced with adversity… plus it’s a story involving a giant Marlin.
I am fully aware of all the wonderful contributions our library makes to our community. A few examples include: eLibrary, informal second language “sessions”, a comforting refuge for some, events for all age groups, and most importantly for many less advantaged citizens, the library is their first stop for information and assistance. In short, Camrose Public Library provides an invaluable service to our community. City council needs to work more closely with all agencies within Camrose to insure the needs of all citizens are met in an effective and efficient manner.
My vision for Camrose is to have a city with the highest quality of life possible. I believe “You can get run over even when you are on the right track if you do not move ahead”. I am a proactive and progressive thinker who likes to make things happen. There is still work to be done for improvement to our quality of life (such as Leduc's "train whistle cessation" initiative), urban wildlife management or the feasibility of Mirror Lake recreational development for increasing tax base while maintaining a delicate balance in fiscal responsibility through prudent and effective governance. I will foster a transparent, responsive, and effective City Council. Major decisions cannot be made in isolation, and I am committed to community engagement. It all starts with respect and good working relationships and the goal of acting for the common good. I strongly believe and am committed to engaging citizens on matters that can have a significant impact on their lives. Major decisions cannot be made in isolation.
